Specialization in Medical Interpreting

Program Description

This program provides core competencies for healthcare interpreters to deliver context base work when performing the work as a cultural mediator or interpreter. Students will be able to perform in a variety of health settings and will develop a good understanding of the human body and medical terminology. Students further develop an understanding for the domain of culture diversity in the U. S. health care system, insurance procedures, and insurance terminology as well as the referral procedures as used in hospitals and clinics.


Objectives


Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology

-Demonstrate knowledge of key medical terms related to the human body.
-Learn basic anatomy and physiology, and the major body systems and functions.
-Relate diseases, illness, and treatment to human anatomy and physiology.
-Demonstrate knowledge of medical equipment, tests, and medication categories.


The impact of culture for better health outcomes
-Understand the concept of culture and how it affects the care giver.
-Understand the connection between language and culture in both languages.
-Learn how the US health care system differs from traditional medicine.
-Demonstrate knowledge of cultural heritage, values, healing practices, family structures and who
influences medical visits.

Healthcare interpreting general, regulatory and legal requirements


-Understand structure of the US healthcare system.
-Understand federal and state regulations surrounding confidentiality, information disclosure, and
mandated reporting.

-Understand the patient’s rights and demonstrate knowledge of patient responsibilities.
-Demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA rules and the effects on medical interpreting.

About the Instructor

As an active interpreter with over 20 servicing the health care profession, Mr. Castillo brings valuable hands-on experience from a wide variety of health settings. He considers himself a promoter of collective intelligence and sees sharing his knowledge and experience as an opportunity to also learn from his peers. His approach promotes inclusiveness through acceptance and tolerance, setting the tone for the openness necessary for effective communication between multicultural individuals. ​

His management experience in the interpreting field includes working as a language recruiter, call center trainer for new hires and quality assurance specialist, managing performance of large teams of OPI/VRI interpreters. 

He is certified as a Medical Interpreter (CMI) through the US National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, holds a Bachelor degree in computer engineering and a Master’s Degree in Linguistics.

Program Cost

The cost per participant is $650.00 per person. The participant gets fully registered with a 50 % down payment, followed by four (4) easy payments. Corporations pay $6,500, the total price for a minimum of 10 participants.

A promotional price of $425.00 is available for the first 15 students that register for our winter program. 

Duration  

45 hours, including live sessions, home and online assignments.
